Obviously, the superb Jesmond Dene, which is a mere 1 minute from the hotel, with acres and acres, of mature trees, paths and a tributary of the Tyne, the Ouseburn, which runs through the bottom of the Dene, into the Tyne at the Quayside.
Jesmond Dene was built and bequeathed to the ‘workers of Newcastle’ by Lord Armstrong, who was an engineer, inventor, philanthropist and armament manufacturer. Armstrong had a love of plants and sent his gardeners all around the world to collect specimens of plants and flowers, which now thrive in the Dene.
There is a fabulous petting zoo – called Pet’s Corner. Dogs are not allowed in, however, they can be tied up at the gates and ogle at the array of rabbits, guinea pigs, pot-bellied pigs, pygmy goats, sheep, birds and other small mammals.
There is a little tea shop called Millfield House where you can get a cuppa and a slice of cake.
